Pet Doors for Storm Doors

A storm door pet door mounts in the lower panel of an aluminum, fiberglass or insulated storm door 1/4 to 2 inches thick, framed and sealed on both faces so the door still latches and closes on its own. The same unit fits garage door panel sections. Choose a size below, or text us photos of your door for a quote.

Storm Door Pet Doors Made for Thin Panels

A storm door is thin. Most lower panels run 1/4 inch to 2 inches, and a pet door built for an entry slab would stick out past both faces and seal badly. The unit sold above was drawn around that depth: the frame sits inside the panel, each face is sealed, and the storm door keeps swinging, latching and pulling itself shut.

It suits homes where a storm door covers the back or side entry, households that prop the main door open in fair weather, and anyone with a sectional garage door they want to turn into a route to the yard.

Built for 1/4 to 2 inch panels

Aluminum, fiberglass and foam-core insulated storm doors all land in that span; door-mount models start at 1 1/4 inches and are the wrong tool here.

Framed on both faces

Interior and exterior frames finish the cut edge, and each side is sealed so air and water stay out.

Insulated, with a lock-out panel

The unit is insulated for hot and cold climates; a security panel slides in from indoors when you want the opening closed.

Four flap sizes, two finishes

Small through Extra Large, 7 x 11 up to 15 x 23 inches, in a White or Dark Bronze frame.

Which Storm Door Do You Have?

Same unit every time; what changes is which part of the door receives it.

Fits · The usual case

Aluminum frame storm door

One panel or two, from any maker. The opening is cut into the lower panel, the depth this unit was designed around.

Fits · Solid section only

Retractable-screen storm door

The cut lands in the solid lower panel, never the screen cassette, so the screen still rolls afterwards.

Fits · 3/4 to 1 1/8 inch core

Insulated storm door

Foam-core panels in that band sit inside the unit's range, and an insulated unit keeps the loss of weather protection small.

Fits · Lower section only

Partial-view fiberglass door

Glass above, a kick panel or lower pane below. The unit goes into that lower section; a glass section is swapped for a notched tempered pane rather than cut.

Fits · Same unit, different door

Garage door panel

A sectional garage door shares the thin profile, so the same unit gives your dog a path between garage and yard without the big door staying up.

Different route · One sheet of glass

Full-view glass storm door

No separate lower panel, and tempered glass cannot be cut once made. That becomes a made-to-measure glass replacement rather than a storm door job; a photo tells us which.

Four Things to Check Before You Add It to the Cart

Panel thickness

Look at the lower panel's edge with the door open. 1/4 inch to 2 inches works; foam-core panels usually read 3/4 to 1 1/8 inches. Over 2 inches is outside its range, so send a photo first.

Room in the lower panel

A storm door's lower panel is shorter than a full slab, and the frame needs clearance all round the flap. Check the panel's width and height against the size you plan to order.

The door behind it

A storm door pet door only carries your pet through the storm door. The entry door needs its own opening, or it stays open while the pet door is in use. Tell us if it already has one.

The closer

The unit adds weight to a light door. The closer is checked at the end of the visit; the how-to guide notes that extra weight can call for a turn of the tension screw.

From Checkout to the First Trip Through

1

Same-day sizing and quote

A written quote and the right size usually come back the same day, once your photos and measurements show the panel suits the unit. Prefer the phone? Call 855-DOG-DOOR.

2

Installer call within two days

Once you order, a nearby installer reaches out 24 to 48 hours later to set the date. Nothing is fabricated, so the only wait is shipping, which is free.

3

The visit: usually one to two hours

By the end, the panel has an opening set to your pet's shoulder height, a frame and seal on each face, and edges cut with blades matched to aluminum or fiberglass so nothing warped or tore.

4

Test and handover

The storm door is swung shut to prove it still latches and closes itself, the flap is tried, and you practice sliding the security panel in from indoors. One visit, no return trip.

How the Labor Is Priced

Our installation cost page lists rates for entry doors, walls, screens, patio inserts and glass, but has no line for storm doors. Storm door labor is priced from your photos, and the figure on the written quote is the one that holds.

One Door, Sixteen Versions

One product fills this collection; its sixteen variants are the same unit in other sizes and colors.

The Installers, and What Backs Their Work

Every order goes to a nearby pro from a nationwide network of installers who are licensed, bonded and insured, and every job carries our craftsmanship guarantee: if the workmanship falls short, we put it right. The storm door installation service page lays out the visit in full.

Behind that sit more than 20 years of fitting pet doors, plus more than 1,100 customer reviews. Pet doors ship free within the lower 48, and a share of every sale goes to no-kill shelters.

Storm Door Questions, Answered Before You Order

I already own a door-mount pet door. Why not put that in the storm door?

Because it was built for a slab 1 1/4 to 2 inches thick. In a thin panel it stands proud on both sides and seals poorly. The storm door unit is shallower and sits within the panel.

Will the storm door still close by itself and latch?

Yes. The cut stays in the lower panel, away from the latch, hinges and closer, and the installer checks the latch and closer before leaving. If the added weight changes the closing speed, the closer's tension screw can be adjusted.

Does the entry door behind the storm door need a pet door too?

If it is kept closed, yes. Pair it with a door mount pet door fitted to the main door, or leave the main door open while the pet uses it.

My storm door swaps between a glass panel and a screen panel. Which gets the pet door?

Keep the screen panel whole for summer and put the pet door in the other one; a glass panel is replaced with a notched tempered pane rather than cut. If your door is screen most of the year, the screen door pet door collection has units that mount into mesh.

How do I pick between the four sizes?

Stand your pet up and measure from the floor to the shoulder top; the flap wants 1 to 2 inches more than that. Then measure across the widest part of the body and allow 2 inches or more. Two sizes close? Order the bigger one.

Can it come out again if we sell the house?

The cut itself is permanent, and it voids the storm door's warranty. The workaround from the how-to guide is a spare lower panel from the storm door brand: install the pet door in the spare, keep the original, and swap them back on moving day.

How long from order to a working pet door?

An installer calls 24 to 48 hours after you order, the unit ships free with no fabrication wait, and the visit usually takes one to two hours.

Is this a job I could do myself?

Yes; the how-to guide covers it with a jigsaw and a metal blade, and it is a lighter job than a wall or glass. The risks are a rushed cut that bends or tears the aluminum and a gap behind the frame that lets water in, which is why many hand it to the installation service.
