What Is an Electronic Dog Door Installation?
An electronic dog door installation puts a pet door in your home that opens only for an authorized animal. Instead of a flap any creature can push, the door reads a small key or tag on your pet's collar. When the right pet approaches, the panel unlocks or slides open; when the pet is through, it closes and locks again. Nothing else gets in.
The two technologies you will see are RFID collar keys, where a battery-powered or hardwired reader unlocks the door for a programmed key, and smart pet doors, where a motorized door opens for a smart tag and reports to an app on your phone. Electronic Dog Door Installation — Frequently Asked Questions
How does an electronic dog door know it is my pet?
Your pet wears a small collar key or smart tag. A reader in the door detects it as your pet approaches and unlocks or opens the door for that pet only. Other animals without a programmed key see a closed door.
Will raccoons or stray cats be able to get in?
No. The door does not respond to animals without a programmed key or tag, and rigid electronic panels lock when closed. The cat door patio insert also locks its flap so a raccoon cannot lift it.
Does an electronic pet door need power?
It depends on the model. Collar-key doors and window inserts run on batteries. The RFID door for doors and walls plugs into a standard outlet or can be hardwired. Smart pet doors use rechargeable batteries. Tell us which outlet is nearby and we will recommend accordingly.
Can I install an electronic dog door in a wall?
Yes. The wall series of the RFID electronic door includes an aluminum tunnel for stud, brick, block, or concrete walls up to 12" thick, and collar-key doors fit walls 1.5" to 2" thick with a wall kit. Smart pet doors also install through walls.
Can I get an electronic pet door without cutting my door?
Yes. The electronic patio pet door insert fits a sliding glass door track and the raccoon-proof window insert fits a sash window, and both lift out when you move. They are the usual choice for renters.
Do electronic pet doors insulate as well as a regular pet door?
A rigid electronic panel seals when closed, but a flap-style electronic door is not as insulated as a dual-flap pet door. If insulation matters, a smart pet door can be mounted over an insulated pet door, giving you the weather seal of the flap with the locking automatic door on top.
Can cats use an electronic pet door?
Yes, with the right model. The collar tag on dog-sized patio doors is too large for most cats, so we recommend the selective-entry cat door patio insert, which programs up to eight cats and tracks whether each one is in or out.
How many pets can one electronic door be programmed for?
Collar-key doors and the electronic patio insert take up to five keys or tags. The cat door insert programs up to eight cats. Smart pet doors give each pet its own tag with its own schedule.
Can I lock the door completely?
