WOW! Completely impressed!

We have just moved to OKC area from Las Vegas, NV and knew we needed a strong dog door to hold up to the weather here, and although my husband can do most anything, cutting a significant hole through brick, next to an electrical outlet, was NOT something I wanted him to do. When I found the Portal Pros website and sent a request for a quote.

Jason called a few days later and although the installation and door we chose was pricey, IT WAS WORTH EVERY PENNY. (Jason gave us a little bit of a discount.) The dog door was shipped to my house and holy cow, this dog door was the strongest, heaviest door I have EVER seen! (Security Boss - MaxSeal™ PRO Pet Door for Walls). So impressed.

The installer, David from Mr. Handyman in North OKC, was on-time, professional, and executed a PERFECT installation through the brick wall of my home. The dog door is perfectly aligned, centered, and I don't have a single negative thing to say. Look how perfectly centered the interior frame is! Baseboard -> door frame -> outlet! WOW! (See photos) He even cleaned up every scrap and dust particle, inside and out. Although David said he has installed MANY dog doors, he had never installed one of these. Even he was impressed with the weight and quality of this door. Out of 5 stars, David gets 10!

Full Door Replacement

A new slab with a pre-installed pet door, fiberglass or stainless steel, goes in on your existing hardware if it is in good condition; glass clear, partitioned or with integrated mini blinds. The original comes off whole and goes into storage, so a landlord or a future seller loses nothing. Pick it for blinds, partitions or a particular glass style, or when the door is tired anyway.

Corner-Notched Glass Replacement

Also called full glass replacement: a tempered panel made to your measurements replaces the pane, notched in one lower corner for the pet door frame. Door, frame and hardware are never touched; tint is optional, and the unit comes single pane or insulated dual pane, Low-E if wanted. Pick it to keep the door you have with the most light and the most seamless result.

Individual Pane Replacement

On a French door of separate small panes, one pane is swapped for a made-to-measure unit carrying the pet door. Need more room than one pane gives? Two or more panes become a single opening, which means removing the dividers between them for good. Pick it for the smallest intervention on a true divided-lite French door.

Notched Glass Lowered Into the Footer

One of the two routes that cannot be undone, and the only one that drops the opening lower. A bottom-notched panel replaces the glass and the footer rail is trimmed, so the pet door sits half in each. Cats, small dogs and older pets get a shorter step over, and almost the whole pane stays glass. Swapping the glass back later is possible; restoring the footer is not.

Three of the four can be undone: a stored slab rehangs on the same hardware, a notched panel gives way to a plain one, and a single French door pane swaps back. The footer notch and a multi-pane French door opening are permanent because something was cut. Sliding Glass Doors: Keep the Track Clear

On a glass slider the choice is between a corner-notched panel and a full door replacement. Either way the walkway stays at full width, the track stays empty, and the door rolls, latches and seals as before; with the notched panel, the lock and any alarm contact stay exactly where they are. French Doors: One Pane or Several

A French door of separate panes gets the individual pane method: one small unit is remade with the pet door while everything around it stays. Pane size sets the limit: a cat or small dog fits through one pane, while a larger dog needs an opening across two or more, the permanent version described above. Multi-lite doors are judged by their layout. The French door pet door collection has the pane-sized units.

Which Glass Can Take a Pet Door?

Tempered glass will not take a cut after it has been made, so the existing pane is always replaced with a new unit matching what you have. Everything is made to measure, so no stock size has to fit, and anything from 1/4 inch through 1 1/2 inches thick is workable:

Single pane

One sheet of tempered glass, matched for thickness.

Dual pane insulated units (IGU)

Two sheets around a sealed spacer; the thermal barrier is kept.

Low-E coated glass

The coating is specified on the replacement, so efficiency holds.

Fixed glass panels

From Order Day to Install Day

The measuring visit

The installer double-checks every measurement on site before anything is made, which is why in-glass work takes two visits.

Two to three weeks of fabrication

The panel or slab is built to the opening, pet door incorporated, matching your glass whether single pane, dual pane or Low-E. Most projects run three to four weeks start to finish.

Install day: one to three hours

An authorized, insured technician does the swap. A glass or pane swap leaves the frame in place; a slab replacement means moving your hardware to the new door. Once it is aligned and sealed, you watch the door open, close and lock, and see how the security panel fits and locks from inside. Most jobs finish in that one install visit.

What the Installation Costs

In-glass installation runs $1,749 to $2,749, which includes the new tempered glass unit. The pet door itself is priced separately. These are standard national prices, and your written quote is the price that counts.

FAQ: Buying an In-Glass Pet Door

Why not just cut an opening in the glass I already have?

Tempered glass shatters when cut after manufacture, so the opening is notched before tempering: a new panel is made and the old one comes out.

I rent. Which of these can I actually use?

Any reversible method. A full door replacement is the cleanest for tenants: the landlord's door is stored untouched and rehung when you leave. Notched glass and one-pane swaps reverse too.

Will the door still slide, latch and seal afterwards?

Yes. The notched and pane methods never touch the frame, rollers or lock; a slab replacement moves your hardware over.

How do I size the flap for my dog?

Width first: the broadest point, chest or hips, plus at least 2 inches. Then height: ground to shoulder top, plus 1 to 2 inches. Between sizes, take the larger; for a giant breed, ask us.

Can the opening be locked when we are away?

Every in-glass model has a lockable, industrial-grade security panel operated from inside. Selective-entry models that open for a collar sensor or microchip are also available; the collar-sensor patio inserts are listed in this collection.

Is this something I can do myself?

No. A cracked panel, a failed seal or a voided warranty is the usual price of a poor fit, and a good fit takes made-to-measure glass, correct glazing and weather sealing.

How long before my pet is using it?

Two visits, three to four weeks: a measuring visit soon after you order, two to three weeks while the glass is made, then an install visit of one to three hours.
