Pet Doors for French Doors

A French door pet door is a made-to-measure unit replacing one pane of a divided-lite French door, or several joined panes for a larger dog, while the frame, hinges and lock stay put. It suits owners wanting the flap set into the grid of glass on a door 1 1/4 to 2 inches thick. Choose a door below or text us photos for a quote.

French Door Pet Doors: Swap One Pane, Keep the Door

Both listings in this collection are made-to-measure units that take the place of glass in a divided-lite French door: one small pane, or for a bigger dog, several neighboring panes joined into one opening. The frame, hinges, lock and the other panes stay as the door came, and no hole is cut through the solid part of the door.

Choose it when you want the flap set into the grid of glass. Small and medium dogs usually fit through one pane; bigger dogs need a span.

Each unit is fabricated to your pane after an installer confirms the numbers in person, and each includes a locking security panel. The French door how-to guide covers the hands-on steps: pane removal, glazing and sealing.

One Pane or Several: How the Swap Works

Can be undone · Small and medium dogs

Single Pane Swap

The installer takes out one pane, ideally the lowest full pane on the leaf you open least, and seats the new unit in its place, finished flush on both faces. Keep the pane that came out: this method counts as reversible, so it can go back in if you move.

Lasting change · Larger breeds

Multi-Pane Span

When no single pane is big enough, two or more adjoining panes become one opening, filled by a single unit built to the combined size. The dividers between them are cut out, so this version cannot be reversed. Because the unit is custom, the flap is not held to a standard size chart.

A door sold as French does not always qualify. One large sheet of glass, even with a grille laid over it, has no small pane to lift out; it takes an in-glass unit from the in-glass pet door collection. If the panes are too small and joining them does not appeal, the guide's other route is a matching replacement leaf fitted with a door mount pet door.

Will One Pane Fit Your Dog? Ask Before You Order

Text us a picture of the door from each side, the rough width and height of one pane, and two pet measurements: height at the shoulder and the widest point. We will say whether one pane does it or a span is needed, then quote the job, normally the same day. Rather talk it through on camera? Book a video call.

What to Check on Your Door

The target is a divided-lite French door between 1 1/4 in. and 2 in. thick. Run through these six points before ordering, and photograph anything you are unsure of:

Separate panes with real dividers

Each pane must be its own piece of glass in its own opening. Grilles sitting on top of one sheet do not count.

Dual-pane insulated glass

A sealed dual-pane unit goes back where one came out, so the door holds on to its insulation.

Low-E coatings

Low-E glass is supported; mention it when you ask for a quote so the replacement is made to suit.

Single glass

Single-pane doors take a unit fabricated to the exact size of the pane it replaces.

Fixed or operating leaf

The stationary half of a pair is fully supported, and the guide recommends it so your working door keeps its full function.

Swing direction: either

In-swing and out-swing doors are handled the same way; the hinge side does not change the method.

The units are priced by square-inch range and built to the exact pane, so the size of the pane or panes and the thickness of the door are the figures that matter. Rough numbers are enough for quoting; the installer takes the exact ones.

After You Order: Measure, Build, Install

1

Order and first call

Place the order for the product we settled on together. A local installer phones 24 to 48 hours later to set up the measuring visit.

2

The measuring visit

Before anything is built, the installer measures the pane opening, door thickness and glass type in person. A made-to-order unit cannot be resized later, which is why this visit comes first.

3

Fabrication

The pane unit is made to those numbers, typically in two or three business days. If the job also calls for a new tempered glass panel, allow two to three weeks for that glass. Once everything is delivered, your installer calls to book the install.

4

Install day

Out comes the old pane, in goes the new unit. Both faces are trimmed and sealed, the flap tested and the lock panel demonstrated before the installer leaves. Expect one to two hours on site. A standard pane swap is typically done about a week after first contact.

Pricing for French Door Work

French door work has no posted national rate: the installation cost page lists it as quoted per job, so send photos for a figure. The price that counts is the one on your written quote.

The Two Units in This Collection

Both listings above are made for French door glass, and each includes a locking security panel. What separates them is construction and the size of opening they suit.

Purpose-built for single panes

Custom MaxSeal French Door Dog Door

Sized by square-inch range and built to the exact pane, in a composite frame with a locking pin, a single or dual flap, and UV-treated, weatherized flap options. Five finishes: Beige, Brown, Dark Bronze, Silver or White. Made for doors 1 1/4 in. to 2 in. thick; the standard choice for replacing one pane.

PRO build · Larger pets and spans

MaxSeal PRO In Glass Dog Door

Listed here for larger pets and multi-pane openings: an aluminum-clad locking panel, twin vinyl flaps on a piano hinge and a precision weather seal, for single or dual-pane glass, Low-E included. Finishes include White, Beige, Brown and Silver. Lifetime manufacturer warranty; the same unit also appears in the in-glass collection.

Who Does the Work

Pane replacement is glazing work, so each order goes to a local installer from our licensed, bonded and insured nationwide network. The French door pet door installation service page describes the work in detail, and you can book the installation alongside the door.

Behind the network: 20-plus years of pet door work, more than 1,100 customer reviews and a craftsmanship guarantee on every job. Pet doors ship free to the contiguous 48 states, and part of each sale goes to no-kill animal shelters.

French Door Pet Door Questions, Answered

My door has one big sheet of glass with a grille on top. Does it qualify?

Not for pane replacement. With nothing to lift out but the whole sheet, the job becomes an in-glass replacement, which the in-glass collection covers. A photo settles it in minutes.

How do I know whether one pane is enough?

Work out the flap first: add 1 to 2 inches to shoulder height, and 2 inches or more to the widest point of the body. Send those with the width and height of one lower pane, and we confirm whether it will take the unit or a span is needed.

Will anyone be able to tell which pane was changed?

From a normal distance it is hard to spot. The unit sits flush with clean frames on both faces, and the surrounding panes are untouched.

Does the door still lock and swing as before?

Yes. Hinges, lock and handle are left alone, and in-swing and out-swing doors get the same treatment.

Can I put it in the half of the door that stays bolted?

You can, and it is often the better spot: the stationary leaf is fully supported, and using it leaves your everyday door working as it did.

Will I lose insulation through the new pane?

No. The unit is built to suit your glass, single or a sealed dual-pane unit, and is Low-E compatible, so the door performs as before.

Why does this take two visits?

Because the unit is built to your particular pane and cannot be adjusted later. The first visit confirms the numbers; the second is the install, once the unit arrives.

How soon will my pet be using it?

For a standard pane swap, typically about a week: a call 24 to 48 hours after ordering, the measuring visit, two or three business days of fabrication, then one to two hours of installation. If new tempered glass has to be made, allow two to three weeks for it.

Can I close it off at night or when we travel?

Yes. Every unit includes a locking security panel. To keep strays out as well, electronic doors that open only for your own pet's collar sensor or microchip are also offered.

Which of the two products should I choose?

For a standard one-pane swap, the Custom MaxSeal French Door Dog Door. For a bigger pet or a multi-pane span, the MaxSeal PRO In Glass Dog Door. Unsure? Send the photos and we will name it.
