Patio Pet Door Inserts for Sliding Glass Doors

Most of the grid above is track inserts: tall panels that stand beside the moving pane of a sliding glass door, flap at the bottom. Spring tension at the top keeps each upright, so nothing is drilled or cut, and the unit comes out again whenever you like.

For something that stays in the door, three in-glass units here go into a notched replacement pane instead: the built-in route, outlined below and covered in the in-glass pet door collection.

No holes, no cuts

Tension does the holding; no screw goes into your frame.

Leaves with you

Lift the panel out when a lease ends; the door is as you found it.

Insulated or electronic

Dual pane panels, collar-sensor entry, and a lock on every model.

Cats to giant breeds

One insert is sized for Saint Bernards, Newfoundlands, Mastiffs and Great Danes.

Track Insert or Notched Pane: What Each Install Involves

Lifts out · One visit, under an hour

Track Insert

The installer sets the adjustable top to your opening, stands the panel in the track on the side your slider travels, and lets the spring lock it upright; stackable 2 inch snap-on extensions handle taller openings. Your slider then shuts against the panel, so the walkway loses its width, typically 8 to 24 inches by flap size.

Stays in the door · Two visits, glass made to order

Notched Replacement Pane

Finished tempered glass shatters under a saw, so the pane your pet uses is replaced. A first visit confirms its exact size; a fabricator then tempers a new panel with the opening notched at your pet's height, framed to look original. On the second visit the installer sets it in your existing frame, seals it and tests it. Single pane, dual pane and Low-E glass are matched. It does not lift out like an insert, though fitting a plain pane back undoes it.

Weighing them up: an insert shows inside and out, dims its strip and holds heat less well than glass, a gap the insulated dual pane models narrow. The notched pane costs far more and waits weeks on fabrication.

Will It Fit Your Slider? What to Check

Almost any residential slider takes one route or the other; fit is confirmed from your photos and numbers before you order:

Double slider, both panels moving

Either route, in whichever panel sees the most pet traffic.

Oversized doors

Inserts sized to order or glass made to measure; send the dimensions.

Single sliding door

Insert or notched pane, whichever you prefer.

Single pane glass

The standard notched replacement.

Low-E coated panels

A notched pane is fabricated with the matching coating.

Insulated glass units (IGU)

The notched pane keeps the sealed double layer; insulated inserts are the removable choice.

Numbers to have ready. For an insert, the track height from the bottom floor channel to the inside of the top channel (measure left, center and right and use the smallest), the width of the floor rail and which panel slides. For notched glass, the width and height of the visible glass. For any route, your pet's shoulder height and their width across chest or hips.

Grab a Tape Measure Before You Order

Send the track height (or the visible glass size if you lean toward notched glass), your pet's measurements and photos of the door from both sides by text (719-301-7678). Back come the route we would pick, the product that fits and, on most jobs, a quote the same day. Or show us the door on a video consultation.

One Visit or Two: The Schedule for Each Route

1

Quote and order

Measurements and photos in, quote back. Once you order, a local installer calls to book a date, usually inside 24 to 48 hours.

2

Insert: install day

The top extension is set to your opening, the panel goes into the track, and the installer checks that the slider still closes and locks. On site: 30 to 60 minutes.

3

Glass: verify, fabricate, return

Visit one checks the measurements before glass is ordered; fabrication takes three to four weeks; visit two is the swap, sealed and tested. Start to finish usually runs three to six weeks.

4

Walkthrough

Before leaving, the installer shows you the flap, the locking security panel and basic care.

What Installation Costs on a Slider

Installing a patio insert costs $159.97, with 30 to 60 minutes on site. A notched tempered unit in place of the pane is $1,749 to $2,749 with the new glass included, set by panel size; panels over 3,200 square inches are quoted per job. The pet door is extra on both routes. All of these are our standard national rates; the figure on your written quote is the one that counts.

Beyond the route, the product (standard, insulated or electronic), flap size, glass type and door or panel size all move the figure. The installation cost page lists the glass prices by panel size.

The Eleven Products in This Collection

Six of the products above are track inserts, three are in-glass units for a notched pane, and two are sash window pet doors. Every patio product here locks, with a security panel or electronically.

The inserts:

Everyday insert

Standard Lockable Pet Patio Door Insert for Sliding Glass Doors

A lockable panel with the tension-fit top, for most standard residential openings.

Insulated insert

MaxSeal Insulated Locking Patio Pet Door Insert

Insulated dual pane glass over a double flap, with snap-lock extensions up top; the insert that comes closest to fixed glass for warmth.

Oversized dogs

Giant Breed Lockable Patio Pet Door

For animals beyond regular flap sizes; full locking panel, same adjustable top.

Selective entry

Elite Super Selective Security Boss Sliding Glass Patio Pet Door Insert

Opens for a registered collar sensor and nothing else, so wildlife stays outside.

Electronic, insulated

PetSafe Electronic Dual-Pane Lockable Patio Pet Door by Security Boss

Collar-tag entry paired with insulated dual pane glass.

Electronic, single pane

PetSafe Electronic Single-Pane Lockable Patio Pet Door by Security Boss

The same collar-reading entry with single pane glass.

The in-glass units, for the notched pane:

Aluminum-clad

MaxSeal PRO In Glass Dog Door

Aluminum-clad locking panel, two vinyl flaps on a piano hinge and a precise weather seal. Beige, Brown, Silver or White.

Low profile

MaxSeal In Glass Dog Door

Double flap insulation and a magnetic seal in a slimmer frame; same four finishes.

Entry price

SB Standard In Glass Pet Door

The lowest-priced of the three in-glass units, in White or Dark Bronze.

Also listed here: the Raccoon Proof Sash Window Pet Door, in insulated dual pane or single pane glass, built for a sash window rather than a patio door; see the window pet door collection.

Patio Pet Door Questions, Answered

Does the slider still lock with an insert in the track?

Yes. The door still opens, closes and locks with the panel in place, and the patio how-to guide suggests a security bar in the leftover track. Each insert also has its own locking panel.

How much of my view goes away?

Only the strip the insert fills, 8 to 24 inches by flap size; the rest stays glass. A notched pane keeps the whole opening clear apart from the pet door.

Is my tall door out of an insert's range?

Rarely. Snap-on extensions widen the range, and an oversized door can take an insert sized to order or a notched pane.

Several pets, but only some should use it. Which product?

The Elite Super Selective insert or either PetSafe Electronic insert. Each opens only for a registered collar sensor, so other animals cannot get in from outside.

Does a Great Dane fit through any of these?

Through the Giant Breed Lockable Patio Pet Door, yes; it is built for dogs beyond the standard size chart.

Will an insert make the room drafty in winter?

An insert insulates less than fixed glass, so in a cold climate choose a dual pane model. A notched pane matches your existing glass.

I rent. What happens when my lease ends?

The insert lifts out of the track and moves with you. Nothing was screwed or cut, so the landlord's door is untouched.

My patio door swings, not slides. Right collection?

No. Inserts need a track. A hinged patio door or French door takes a pet door through the door or its glass; see the French door pet doors or the in-glass collection.
