Pet Doors for Doors

A door mount pet door is fitted low in your existing wood, fiberglass, steel or hollow core door, 1 1/4 to 2 inches thick, framed on both faces so the door still closes, locks and seals as before. It suits homes with a usable back or side door near the yard. Choose a door below, or text us photos for a quote.

Door Mount Pet Doors Fit the Door You Already Own

Every unit above goes into an opening cut low in an existing slab, wood, fiberglass, steel or hollow core, usually 1 1/4 to 2 inches thick, with a frame on each face clamping the door between them. No wall is opened, no glass is made, and the door goes on closing as it always has.

It suits any home with a usable back or side door near the yard, and hollow interior doors qualify too.

One visit, one to two hours

Mark, cut, frame, seal and test in one appointment; steel and hollow core can run a little longer.

The door still works

Handle, deadbolt, hinges and weatherstrip carry on as before.

Locks from inside

On the flap models, a rigid panel fitted from the house side shuts the opening completely.

Not permanent if plans change

The unit comes out and the cut is patched if you ever want the slab whole.

Prefer to see every cut? Read the door mount how-to guide, or hand it to our door mount installation service.

Which Doors Can Take One

The material decides blade, prep and whether the cut needs backing.

Check the clearance

Doors with a window

Works when enough solid door sits under the glass; a lite reaching too low means another method, such as a new glass unit around the opening.

Common entry door

Fiberglass

A clean cut with the right blade, finished as if made that way.

Reinforcement required

Hollow core

Nothing behind the skins, so framing goes in around the hole for the unit to grip.

Slab only

Pre-hung units

Only the leaf is cut; jamb, hinges, strike plate and seals are never involved.

Follows the layout

Raised-panel doors

The opening sits in a lower panel, rails and stiles forming a ready-made border.

Heavier cut

Solid core

Dense material asks for sturdier tools and gives back a rigid mount with crisp edges.

Needs the right saw

Steel

A metal skin, often over foam, needs dedicated cutting gear; the quote may sit a little higher.

Simplest

Wood and wood composite

The everyday case: a tidy cut, little preparation, a neat frame on both faces.

One Door Photo, Two Pet Measurements

Photograph the door from outside, note its material and thickness, and measure your pet: floor to shoulder top, and width at the broadest point. Text it all to 719-301-7678 and we confirm fit, size and price, normally the same day.

Getting the Size and the Height Right

Two measurements size the flap; three choices place it, all marked before any cutting.

Flap width

Widest point plus 2 inches or more

Chest or hips, whichever is broader, then the extra for comfortable clearance on both sides.

Flap height

Shoulder height plus an inch or two

Floor to withers plus that margin, so the flap clears the back without forcing a hop.

On the line?

Round up, never down

A roomy flap causes no trouble; a tight one makes the animal squeeze. Puppies, future pets and multi-pet homes (size to the tallest and widest) all argue for going larger.

Bottom edge

Between 2 and 8 inches off the floor

An easy step-over that keeps weather out and leaves room for the security panel.

Side to side

Centered in the lower panel

On a paneled door the framing decides; never across a panel line or a window.

Keep a margin

Clear of the edges and stiles

At least 2 inches of door should remain beside the cut and above the bottom rail, and the vertical stiles stay whole.

What Happens After You Click Buy

1

Quote and product match

Send the door photo and your pet's numbers; we name the model and size and price it, usually within the day.

2

The installer calls

A local installer reaches out within 24 to 48 hours of the order to set a date; the door ships free, typically arrives in one to five working days, and the visit usually follows within days.

3

Cut, frame, seal

The opening is marked to your pet's height and cut with a blade matched to the material; inner and outer frames go in, and a textured entry door gets a silicone bead around the outside frame.

4

Test and hand-over

Flap swing checked both ways, seal checked all round, security panel demonstrated. Arrival to hand-over typically takes one to two hours.

Why the caulk line: molded panels on most fiberglass and steel entry slabs stop a frame sitting flat, and the bead closes the resulting gaps against drafts, rain and bugs. Weather side only, clear unless you want white on a white door, never painted over, no extra charge; a flat slab may not need one.

What the Labor Costs

Exterior door (wood, metal, fiberglass): $373.79. Interior door (wood, metal, fiberglass): $299.42. Each covers labor, hardware and sealing; the pet door is priced on its own. Those are the standard national prices; the written quote you receive is the number that counts.

Quotes shift for a steel skin, a hollow door needing framing, an XXL or custom opening, an odd thickness or awkward access. Door work sits well below wall and in-glass pricing; the installation cost page lists every type.

Reading the Lineup Above

All seven are door mount units; here is what separates them.

Top of the range

MaxSeal PRO Door Mount Pet Door

Two vinyl flaps with air between, a seal rated for severe heat and cold, a locking panel in composite aluminum and HDPE. Ten sizes, XS to XXL, five finishes; for big dogs and harsh climates.

The usual pick

MaxSeal Door Mount Pet Door

The same dual-flap insulation, magnetic closure and locking panel, one step below the PRO. Right for most homes and moderate weather.

Entry price

SB Standard Door Mount Pet Door

The lowest-priced door in the collection, in white or dark bronze, and it still comes with a slide-in locking panel.

For chewers

SB72 Chew Proof Door Mount Pet Door

Behind the vinyl flap swings a hard aluminum panel, so a dog that shreds the flap still meets a metal weather barrier.

Made to your opening

Custom MaxSeal and Custom MaxSeal PRO Door Mount Pet Doors

Either model built to the exact rough cut you give us: an old pet door's non-standard hole, or a giant breed needing more than XXL.

Saloon-style alternative

PlexiDor Door Mount Dog Door

No flap at all: two rigid, see-through, shatter-resistant panels part in the middle saloon-fashion inside an aluminum frame. American-made, with sizes reaching dogs of 220 lb.

Still torn? Call 855-DOG-DOOR with the door type, thickness and your pet's measurements, and we will name the model.

The People Who Do the Cutting

Every order goes to a licensed, bonded and insured installer from a nationwide network, and a craftsmanship guarantee means anything wrong with the installation gets put right. Full details are on our door mount installation page.

Behind them stand 20-plus years in pet doors and more than 1,100 customer reviews. Pet doors ship free, and a share of each sale goes to no-kill shelters.

Questions Buyers Ask Before Ordering

Will the door still close, latch and seal like before?

Yes. The cut is confined to the lower slab; lock, hinges, jamb and weatherstrip are never touched.

Our back door is steel. Does that rule it out?

No. The installer brings the right cutting gear and the frames finish as on wood; the quote may run a little higher.

Can a hollow interior door take one?

Yes, once framing is built around the hole so the unit has solid material to bite into; that is part of the installation, not a separate job.

There is a window in the door. Still possible?

Yes, if enough solid panel sits below the glass. A lite that comes down too far calls for another route, such as a new pane made with the opening built in. A photo settles it.

Does cutting void the door's warranty?

On the slab, usually yes; frame, hardware and weatherstrip coverage normally survives. If that matters, a wall mount pet door or an in-glass installation leaves the door uncut, and a factory-fitted new slab keeps the original intact.

An old pet door is already in the door. Can it be swapped?

Yes. A hole that matches a standard size takes a stock MaxSeal or MaxSeal PRO; a non-standard one takes a Custom MaxSeal PRO or Custom MaxSeal built to those dimensions, so nothing is enlarged.

How thick can the door be?

The units here are made for doors 1 1/4 to 2 inches thick, and a standard 1 3/4 inch door is the quickest job. Outside that range the product choice changes, so give the thickness when you send your photo and we will advise.

Is this a weekend project we could do ourselves?

Of the cut-in methods it is the friendliest to a handy owner, and the how-to guide walks through it. A professional adds a weather-tight frame, placement matched to your pet, and no drafts later.
