Match your pet's shoulder height and body width to the right opening size. As a rule of thumb, choose the pet opening 1.5 to 2 inches taller than your tallest pet's shoulders.

Window Height Ranges
Measure from the very bottom inside track to the very top inside track of your open sliding window. Match your measurement to one of the six ranges below. If your measurement falls within 1/2 inch of the bottom of a range, call us before you order and we will build a small alteration into the unit for a proper fit.

Windows taller than 73.5"? Snap on 2 inch extensions add reach beyond Range 6. Two extensions bring the total adjustment range to 7.25". Extensions stack indefinitely and require no tools or hardware.
Will This Insert Fit My Sliding Window?
Before you order, check two things on your window:
- Track width: The bottom of the insert has a 5/16" wide base with a semi-circle C channel that straddles the center rail on the floor track. If the center rail on your floor track is wider than 5/16", this insert will not straddle it and will not fit properly. Any residential sliding window channel at least 1" wide will accept this insert.
- Top track: The spring loaded top of the insert is 11/16" wide and fits into most any sliding window top channel. If your top track has a center rail, the insert can straddle rails up to 9/16" wide.
If either measurement is outside these limits, call Portal Pros at 855 DOG DOOR and send us a photo of your track. We will let you know if the insert will work before you buy.
How to Install a Side Sliding Window Pet Door
Installation takes most homeowners under an hour and requires zero tools.
- Open the sliding window to the position where the insert will sit. The insert takes up the width of one of your pet opening sizes plus the width of the panel. For example, a Medium insert occupies 16" of horizontal window space.
- Set the insert into the track vertically with the pet door at the bottom. Seat the bottom C channel over the center rail of the floor track.
- Compress the spring loaded top until the insert seats fully into the upper track. The top will float on tension rods within a 3.25" adjustment range.
- Lock down the top with the two thumbscrews. This is what prevents someone outside from compressing the top and removing the insert.
- Snap on 2 inch extensions if your window is taller than the range you chose. Extensions lock in place with no screws or hardware.
- Install the extendable brace bar between the closed sliding sash and the window frame. This immobilizes the sash so it cannot be forced open from outside.
- Apply the 3 inch vinyl weather stripping to the back side of your sliding sash. This seals the gap that opens between the sliding panel and the fixed panel when the insert is in place.
- Test the flap and the security panel. The flap should swing freely and the lockdown panel should slide in and out cleanly.
Advanced Installation: Stationary Panel Mounting
On some sliding windows, the SB Standard insert can also mount on the stationary side. Many windows have stoppers that prevent the stationary panel from moving. If those stoppers can be removed, the stationary panel can be repositioned to accommodate the insert.
This technique will not work on windows where the stationary panel is molded into the frame.
Weather Sealing and Insulation
Every Security Boss window insert ships with weather sealing on all critical surfaces:
- Replaceable bulb seals line both sides of the insert. These slide into a t-slot groove and can be replaced without any tools if they ever wear out.
- 3 inch vinyl weather stripping attaches to the back of your sliding sash to seal the gap that appears between the sliding panel and the fixed panel when the insert is in place.
- Dual flap option creates an air pocket between the two flaps for maximum insulation in cold climates.
Security
The SB Standard Side Sliding Window Insert is engineered around the assumption that someone might try to remove it from outside. Every security feature stacks on top of the others:
- The spring loaded top locks down with two thumbscrews accessible from inside only. Without releasing them, the top cannot be compressed from outside.
- The lockable security panel slides over the pet door opening to block access on demand.
- The extendable brace bar immobilizes the sliding sash so it cannot be forced open along its track.
