Hale Pet Door Installation
Hale Pet Door Installation, Done Right by Pet Door Specialists
Hale has built pet doors in America since 1985, with aluminum frames, double flaps and a locking security cover. Portal Pros is a certified, authorized Hale dealer. We sell and install Hale door, wall, in glass, screen and kennel models, in standard sizes or made to measure. Pet doors are all we do, so yours goes in level, sealed and secure on day one.
Three parts that do the work
Every Hale pet door is built around the same three parts, whichever model you choose.
-
1
An aluminum frame
The frame is extruded aluminum and frames the opening on its own, so there is no plastic surround to crack or fade.
-
2
Double flaps
Door and wall models come with two flexible vinyl flaps as standard, one on each face, held shut by magnets and sealed with nylon pile weather stripping.
-
3
A locking security cover
A 1/4" thick cover slides in and locks with a steel pin when you want the door closed. It loads from the top as standard, or from the side on request.
Details that set a Hale door apart
Double flap as standard
Two flaps with an air space between them are standard on door and wall models. A single flap is offered for interior use.
Magnets and steel strikes
Alnico magnets in the frame pull against stainless steel strikes riveted to the flap, so the flap closes and stays closed.
Nylon pile weather strip
Black nylon pile runs around the flap opening to seal the edges against drafts.
Made to your size
Eleven standard flap sizes cover cats to giant breeds, and Hale builds custom sizes when a standard one will not fit.
Four frame finishes
White, dark bronze, Arizona beige and brushed aluminum, to suit the door or wall the pet door goes into.
Backed by Hale
Hale offers a lifetime warranty on the frame and a 10 year prorated warranty on the flaps, subject to its terms.
Hale models we install
Hale makes a model for each kind of opening. We quote the pet door together with the installation, so you get one price for the finished job.
Wall Model
Goes through an exterior or interior wall with a pre-assembled aluminum tunnel lined with carpet, plus a rain cap as standard. Suits stud, stucco, brick and block walls.
Door Model
Installs in wood, metal and composite doors 1 1/4" to 2" thick. Also the model used for French door installs.
In-Glass Model
Sits in a glass unit in a sliding glass door, French door or window. Hale requires professional installation for this model, and the glass is supplied separately.
Screen Model
Fits screen doors, window screens and screened porches with a single flap. It has no security cover and is not made for security screen doors.
Kennel Model
A commercial door with a single exterior flap that is opened and closed by a pulley, for through wall or frame only kennel openings.
Where we install it
In doors
Wood, steel and fiberglass exterior doors, garage entry doors and French doors.
In walls
Walls up to 10" thick as standard, with longer tunnels available by custom order.
In glass
Single pane glass, or double pane units up to 2" thick, in sliding doors and windows.
In screens
Screen doors, window screens and screened porches and lanais.
A made to measure door deserves a careful install
A Hale door is built to seal. That only works if the opening is cut square, the tunnel is flashed and the frame sits flat against the surface.
We measure your pet and your opening before the door is ordered, which matters most with custom sizes, and we handle the wall, door or glass work so the finished job looks like it belongs.

Which Hale size fits your pet?
Measure from the ground to the top of your pet's shoulders and across the widest part of the chest. The top of the flap should sit 1" to 2" above your pet's back, and the flap should be 1" to 2" wider than the chest. With more than one pet, size for the largest.
| Size | Flap (W x H) | Pet weight |
|---|---|---|
| Small Medium | 6 1/2" x 9 1/2" | Up to 10 lbs |
| Tall Small Medium | 6 1/2" x 12 1/2" | 12 to 25 lbs |
| Medium | 8 1/2" x 12 1/2" | 10 to 35 lbs |
| Tall Medium | 8 1/2" x 16" | 30 to 45 lbs |
| Large | 11" x 16" | 40 to 55 lbs |
| Tall Large | 11" x 19 1/2" | 50 to 95 lbs |
| Tall Large Plus | 11" x 23 1/2" | Up to 110 lbs |
| Extra Tall Large | 11" x 27 1/2" | Up to 120 lbs |
| Extra Large | 14" x 19 1/2" | Up to 120 lbs |
| Extra Large Plus | 14" x 23 1/2" | Up to 150 lbs |
| Giant | 15 1/2" x 27 1/2" | Giant breeds |
Weights are Hale's guidance. A tall, narrow dog and a short, wide dog of the same weight need different sizes, so we go by measurements. The step over at the bottom of the door is 2" as standard. Need a size that is not listed? Hale builds custom sizes to order. We measure for you as part of your quote.

Set up your Hale door the way you want it
Side loading cover
The security cover loads from the top as standard. A side loading cover is the option to choose when there is no clear space above the door.
Cover inside, outside or both
The security cover can be fitted on the inside of the door, the outside, or both sides.
Rain cap
An aluminum rain cap is standard on the Wall Model and a no cost option on the Door Model, to shed water above the opening.
Longer tunnels
Wall tunnels come in 10" and 16" lengths and are cut to your wall thickness. Longer tunnels are made by custom order.
Flap choices
Flaps ship textured as standard, with clear flaps on request. A training flap is available for pets that are new to a pet door.
Replacement flaps
When a flap wears out after years of use, a replacement flap kit brings the door back to new without a new frame.
Hale installation questions
Who makes Hale pet doors?
Hale Pet Door has made pet doors in America since 1985. Its doors use extruded aluminum frames, double vinyl flaps with magnets and nylon pile weather stripping, and a locking security cover. Portal Pros is a certified and authorized Hale dealer and installs them in all 50 states.
Is Portal Pros an authorized Hale dealer?
Yes. Portal Pros is a certified and authorized Hale dealer. We sell Hale pet doors and install them in all 50 states, so you can get the door and the installation from one company.
Which Hale model do I need?
It depends on the opening. The Door Model goes in a hinged door, the Wall Model goes through a wall with a tunnel, the In-Glass Model sits in a glass unit, the Screen Model fits screen doors and porches, and the Kennel Model is for kennels. Tell us where you want the door and we will recommend the model.
What size Hale pet door do I need?
Measure your pet's shoulder height and chest width. The top of the flap should sit 1" to 2" above your pet's back and the flap should be 1" to 2" wider than the chest. Hale lists 11 standard sizes, from 6 1/2" x 9 1/2" up to 15 1/2" x 27 1/2". We confirm sizing during your quote.
Does Hale make custom sizes?
Yes. Hale builds custom sizes to order, which helps when you are replacing an old pet door and want to reuse the opening, or when a standard size does not suit your pet. Custom doors take a little longer to arrive. See custom dog door installation.
Can a Hale pet door be installed in glass?
Yes, with the In-Glass Model, which Hale says must be professionally installed. The glass is replaced with a unit made for the pet door, and the glass is priced separately from the pet door. See glass dog door installation for how it works.
How thick a wall can a Hale Wall Model go through?
The Wall Model suits walls up to 10" thick as standard, and the tunnel is cut down for thinner walls. Longer tunnels are available by custom order. Wall installation is $1,197 for vinyl, wood shake or cement board and $1,397 for brick, stucco or concrete.
What is the warranty on a Hale pet door?
Hale offers a lifetime warranty on the frame and a 10 year prorated warranty on the flaps, subject to its terms. Installation labor is not part of the manufacturer warranty.
Do I need a professional installer?
Many owners fit a Door Model themselves. Wall installs mean cutting through siding, stucco or masonry and building a tunnel, and glass installs mean replacing the glass, so those are best done by a trained installer.
How much does a Hale pet door cost installed?
The price of the door depends on the model, size and options, so we quote it with your installation. Installation is $373.79 for a standard exterior door, $1,197 for a vinyl, wood shake or cement board wall, and $1,397 for brick, stucco or concrete. See dog door installation cost for the full price list.
